Cigar: La Libertad Short Perfecto
Wrapper: Habano grown in Peru
Binder: Nicaraguan seed binder grown in Peru

Filler: Nicaraguan and Dominican Ligero

Construction/Appearance (10 points):

Matt » Out of the cellophane, this short, but classic bomb shaped perfecto looks a lot more expensive than the price you pay for it which impressed me.  From tip to tip, the cigar is rolled tightly with a well constructed cap.  The pre-light aroma is rich with chocolate, tobacco, and leather notes which invites you to jump right in and light it up. To critique, there are that small veins visible, the medium brown color is a bit splotchy, and I could see lines from the press forms, but overall this is a great looking cigar. – Points: 8 of 10

Larry » It’s and interesting shape, the short perfecto.  It’s oily and veiny in appearance, a well made cigar. – Points: 10 of 10

Draw, Ash Quality, Burn Quality (20 points):

Matt » Draw: I was expecting a bit of a difficult draw at first, but some serious effort was needed to power through the initial tight draw.  Past the initial draw, it opened to a medium draw – having some resistance, but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of the cigar. Ash Quality: Solid stack the whole way through. Burn Quality: The cigar burned even.  At one point it was slightly off, but caught right up. – Points: 16 of 20

Larry » Draw: I had to cut both ends to get this cigar to draw.  There was still quite a bit of resistance even after these adjustments. Ash Quality: The cigar produced a light grey ash which held on for over and inch and in fact only fell off because I knocked it off. Burn Quality: Despite it being difficult to draw at first, it burned well, even and slow. – Points: 17 of 20

Smoking Characteristics (30 points):

Matt » Start:  After powering through the initial light, the flavor of this perfecto subtly intensifies, and offers smooth woodsy and toasty flavors, with a touch of cedar-like spice.  The taste concentrates around the upper pallet, and the slightly oily feel to the smoke allows those woodsy notes to pleasantly linger in the mouth. Middle:  Moving toward the middle of the cigar where the ring gage is the largest, the wood notes intensify, where the spice and toasty notes mellow slightly. The Finish:  This perfecto finishes clean.  While the flavors soften, they remain consistent, with no bitterness or rancidness. – Points: 28 of 30

Larry » Start:  For me this is a mild to medium bodied cigar.  I did taste a lot of leather through the middle portion of the cigar.  There’s not a lot of complexity to the cigar, it’s pretty straight forward.  It gives off a pleasant aroma and produces a fair amount of smoke from the foot as it burns. – Points: 25 of 30

Overall Impression (40 points):

Matt » I have to say this is a really enjoyable medium bodied cigar.  It leaves you wanting to add it to your collection of cigars to smoke on a regular basis, especially for the price.  While it is not a super complex cigar, it is very consistent and offers a lot of flavor.  It’s one of those cigars you can enjoy any time and would pair well with a variety of libations or is just as enjoyable by its self.  Many cigars have a dry smoke that sharpens the flavors in your mouth, but this cigar has that slightly oily smoke which helps to round out the flavors.  If you like a medium bodied cigar, this is one to put on your list to try.  To avoid the tough initial draw, I might suggest trying one of the other sizes they offer. – Points: 37 of 40

Larry » This is a well made cigar.  It was hard at first to draw, and there was some resistance all the way to the end.  I liked the shape of this perfecto.  Overall, the La Libertad Short Perfecto is straight forward and a good cigar for the money. – Points: 35 of 40
